Signs It’s Time to Remove Dead or Diseased Trees

Dead or dying trees are more likely to fall during inclement weather. Look for signs of disease or decline to tell if a tree is dead or dying. Below, we run through a list of signs to look for. These signs suggest it’s best to remove a tree that’s ailing.

Do the Twig Test – and Check for Other Signs of Disease/Decay

This is a simple test that can be done to determine if there is reason for concern. Break off a twig and see how it appears and feels. If the wood appears green, the tree is still alive. However, if the twig is brittle and dark, the tree is likely dead or dying. Inspect other parts of the same tree to see if it’s damaged all the way around or just in certain areas. Other signs to look for that suggest a tree is dead or dying include:

  • Sticks are everywhere
  • The bark is falling off
  • Visible signs of rot or decay
  • There are open wounds
  • There are no leaves
  • You see termites or pests

The Tree Is Leaning Severely

If a tree suddenly starts to lean and it didn’t lean before, the roots may be dying or dead. You may be able to brace the tree but not save the tree. In most cases, a leaning tree is already fatally injured and it’s best to cut it down.

The Tree Is Close to Power Lines or Your Home

Trees cause millions of dollars in damages each year. Any tree can cause damage if it falls during a storm, even healthy ones. However, a diseased or dying tree is more likely to be toppled over during a storm or high winds.

The Tree Is Affecting Nearby Trees

A dying or dead tree can cause issues with nearby trees. For instance, a tree that’s dead or dying due to disease can spread that disease to other trees and plants. It can also be a source of pests if it’s close to entrances to your home.

The Tree Is an Eyesore

Lastly, a tree that’s dead or dying isn’t an appealing sight. Even if the tree is still stable, it can be a drain on your property’s value. The good news is dead or dying trees can be removed along with the stump. The remains of the tree can also be used as mulch for new growth.
